Today, the federal government announced $7.5 million for London under the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI). Individuals experiencing homelessness are facing even greater risks to their health and safety because of the pandemic. The RHI will cover the construction of modular housing, as well as the acquisition of land and the conversion of existing buildings to affordable housing for members of our community who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The RHI is part of the National Housing Strategy (NHS). While the funding profile for the NHS spans a 10-year timeframe, the RHI is a rapid response to emerging pressures from COVID-19. The majority of these funds will be committed to projects in 2020-21, with spending continuing into 2022.
Under the NHS, the construction and renovation of affordable housing units in London has been a key priority. I’ve had the chance to work with many federal, provincial and municipal colleagues to secure that vision for London. We will keep going.
*With one obvious exception, all photos are from housing announcements that were made prior to onset of covid-19.
